This position conducts bridge inspections within the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Greenfield District, in order to maintain public safety and confidence, and to protect public investment. Bridge Inspectors must conform to the National Bridge Inspection Standards by inspecting each bridge at least biennially, assigning ratings to bridge elements and reporting findings in accordance with the coding guidance developed by the Federal Highway Administration and INDOT. Inspectors notify the Senior Bridge Inspection Engineer for submittal to the Bridge Asset Engineer.  The Bridge Asset Engineer will then prioritize work to be done to the bridges.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine biennial bridge inspections
  • Performs routine and watch-list large culvert inspections (4’–20’ span)
  • Prepares & submits electronic database reports for completed bridge and large culvert inspections
  • Reviews bridge and culvert reports
  • Performs special inspections i.e. fracture critical, watch-list, and in-depth bridge inspections
  • Utilizes access equipment i.e. ladders, Reach-All, and lift truck when required
  • Recognizes and reports deficiencies to bridge maintenance crew for corrective action
  • Recommends needed bridge and culvert work to the Senior Bridge Inspection Engineer.
  • Stays on-call to perform emergency damage inspections, i.e. collision, high water, etc.
  • Attends training sessions and conferences to stay current in case  studies, inspection and maintenance methods, and other information critical to INDOT’s Bridge Inspection program
  • Provides central office bridge inspection section the bridge inspection/inventory data required for NBIS and bridge management needs
  • The field inspection durations and the associated physical effort vary widely. Physical effort during routine inspections includes, walking up and down slopes, climbing fences and handling a ladder. Staying active & alert during extensive inspection events, such as emergency or nighttime inspections.

Preferred Experience:

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET Accredited school.  Working towards being an Indiana P.E. ( If not already licensed in Indiana.)
  • Hold or be able to obtain a Valid Indiana Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to access all parts of the bridges, this requires climbing steep slopes and having good vision.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and other technical documents pertaining to bridges and culverts.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn our database software.

  • S-Brite Training at Purdue West Lafayette Campus “Inspecting Steel Bridges for Fatigue”


Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

Direct supervision of one or more staff members.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
