This position serves as the Real Estate Team Lead – Surveyor for the District. The position provides oversight in the preparation of descriptions, plats and associated documents that make up right-of-way (ROW) Engineering parcel packets. The position is also responsible for signing and stamping in-house right-of-way engineering documents. This position plans, directs, and administers abstracting and right-of-way engineering for projects within the District.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

 Prepares descriptions and plats for parcels acquired for State projects, then finalizes right-of- way plans;
 Instructs, advises, and trains lower-level Right-of-Way survey technicians in the Section;
 Practices and procedures and in theory, practice and methods in the performance of topographic, drainage, bridge and construction surveys;
 Reviews and evaluate ROW plans and parcel packets submitted by consultants in order to ensure accuracy and compliance with current policies, procedures and standards;
 Keeps all records and takes field notes conventionally and electronically;
 Makes drawings and sketches of field survey details;
 Utilizes computer software and programs including SPMS, LRS, MIP, Chronolog, PeopleSoft, Outlook, CADD, Inroads, and Microsoft;
 May operate survey equipment (e.g., electronic data collectors, total stations, GPS equipment, robotic total stations);
 Operates a state survey van to courthouses to research land deeds and to transport equipment (e.g., automatic level, GPS equipment, total station, magnetic locators and robotic total stations) to job sites;
 Researches and compiles information from state, county, and city records to complete field surveys, takes notes, searches records, land deeds and titles, and prepares notes to present clear view of project;
 Performs mathematical computations and prepares time sheets and car mileage sheets;
 Contacts supervisors, utilities, planners and property owners concerning survey work;
 May set up traffic control;
 Drafts or plots survey drawings from field data or office calculations;
 Provides information and guidance in safety matters and practices;
 Attends meetings and training as necessary; and,
 Performs other related duties as assigned.


 High School diploma or equivalent;
 Real Estate license and/or associates degree in survey technology or minimum of four (4) years experience in right-of-way engineering preferred;
 Licensed Surveyor in the State of Indiana;
 Must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license;
 Specialized knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, and surveying;
 Considerable knowledge of engineering principles and practices applied in the location, design and construction of roads, bridges, dams, and buildings;
 Considerable knowledge of right-of-way Engineering techniques;
 Considerable knowledge of laws, policy and procedure pertaining to surveying, right-of-way engineering and real estate;
 Basic knowledge of the various methods that are utilized in the acquisition of land and associated properties;
 Skill in the operation of all types of surveying instruments;
 Ability to apply principles to solve practical, everyday problems;
 Ability to read, copy and record figures;
 Ability to gather, collate and classify data;
 Ability to handle routine and sensitive inquiries from, and contacts with government officials, property owners and contractors;
 Ability to act as a lead worker and instruct lower-level surveyors and technicians in methods and procedures used to develop right-of-way plans;
 Ability to demonstrate physical agility and lift 50 pounds; and,
 Ability to establish friendly work atmosphere.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
