About the Putnamville Correctional Facility:
The Putnamville Correctional Facility is a medium-security prison for men located on 4,350 acres near Greencastle, Indiana in Putnam County. It currently houses approximately 2,400 inmates.

Established in 1914, the prison was known for nearly 70 years as the Indiana State Farm. Inmates, nearly all of whom were serving time for minor misdemeanor offenses, worked in the prison's extensive farm and dairy operations.


About the position:

This position works mainly in our offender commissary, organizing orders placed by offenders and delivering the commissary items to the correct offenders.


The salary for this position traditionally starts at $29,588.00 per year but may be commensurate with education and/or experience.

About the Job:

The Stores Clerk performs a wide variety of tasks in the supervision and overall operation of stocking, disbursing and controlling goods and supplies.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Authorize accuracy of all orders received in storeroom and authorize all goods received.
  • Contact vendors regarding partial shipments and/or misorders.
  • Maintain detailed inventory records and records of items ordered.
  • Evaluate and recognize record keeping or storage procedures as necessary.
  • Ensure proper storage procedures and rotation of stock for perishable items.
  • Make recommendations on purchase of new equipment for warehouse and maintenance required in building.
  • Oversee and assembles equipment received in “knocked down” condition.
  • Ensure security of inmate staff assigned to warehouse.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Thorough knowledge of requisitioning and disbursing procedures, consumption rates of stored items and inventory control procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of stock items, their locations and the proper methods of storing a variety of goods and supplies based upon efficient space utilization and a variety of state and federal regulations.
  • Effective communication skills. 
  • Practical knowledge of state regulations in handling and storing foodstuffs and perishables.
  • Ability to train inmates and staff in proper operation of all equipment and proper methods of storage.
  • Ability to maintain detailed, accurate inventory and purchasing records.
  • Ability to operate forklift, hand-truck and other mechanical equipment in warehouse.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
