Works in the offender law library at Putnamville Correctional Facility, providing assistance to offenders by answering questions and directing them to a wide variety of sources to obtain legal information

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Assist offenders in locating reference materials
  • Ensure compliance with security procedures
  • Prepare monthly statistical reports concerning circulation
  • Maintain current informational resources
  • Request procurement of current literature and supplies
  • Maintain inventory control
  • Classify publications according to the classification system selected by the library
  • Train clerical staff
  • Attend professional workshops to keep abreast of changes in the field of library science
  • Provide current information and continuing education for the librarians and staff on a variety of topics such as new laws and requirements affecting libraries
  • Answer offender questions relating to reference materials and locating particular information
  • Supervise offender workers in the library
  • Provide cataloging and classification expertise to make information sources readily available
  • Provide accessible library information services
  • Perform related duties as required



Preferred Experience:
  • Specialized knowledge of library science, including applications and capabilities of computerized systems
  • Extensive knowledge of library organization and the ability to apply this knowledge practically to deal with specialized problems of libraries
  • Thorough knowledge of library related laws and requirements, and the ability to apply these to day-to-day operations of the library
  • Ability to train other library personnel to utilize the library’s facilties and resources
  • Extensive knowledge of library information resources and the ability to utilize knowledge to meet requested informational needs
  • Broad knowledge of library related laws and regulations needed to perform daily library operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to organize assignments according to priority needs of the facility, and assign work to offenders
  • Ability to work within a culturally diversified environment
  • Ability to plan and organize the work of others
  • Ability to prepare and present a variety of reports and logs
  • Ability to work under emergency conditions
  • Working knowledge of basic street slang and security threat groups
  • Ability to recognize, analyze and to formulate solutions to problems
