Hire Salary: The starting salary for this position is $10.88 per hour, but may be commensurarte with education and experience. 

About the job:

The Division of Nature Preserves is seeking a qualified and committed individual as a Nature Preserves Steward for East Central Indiana. The Nature Preserves Steward assists the Regional Ecologist with property management and habitat restoration. This is a part-time permanent position working up to 30 hours a week.


A day in the life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Control invasive species using equipment, hand tools, and herbicides
  • Keep the Regional Ecologist informed of any developments on the preserves such as invasive species, trail issues, problems with neighbors, etc.
  • Keep a record on which plant control techniques have been used at what times in order to aid in planning for future work. This includes herbicides, application techniques, and spray additives.
  • Make sure tools, supplies and equipment are in good working order. This includes notifying the Regional Ecologist when outside service or new supplies are needed.
  • Assisting in the training of new crew members
  • Alert the Regional Ecologist to personnel issues, both positive and negative
  • Assist with prescribed burns including the preparation of burn lanes, preparing burn equipment, and conducting burns
  • Maintain good relationships with preserve neighbors and the general public in order to gain their cooperation with preserve management and control of invasive plants.
  • Maintain good relationships with other nature preserve owners, including other DNR divisions
  • Assist other DNR regions, as requested, particularly with prescribed burns

What we're looking for:
  • Knowledge and skill typically acquired through an Associates or Baccalaureate degree in Biology, Natural Resources, or a related field. Comparable work experience may be substituted for a degree.
  • Interest or experience in plant identification and land stewardship including invasive species identification and control, prescribed fire, and succession control.
  • Interest or experience maintaining trails
  • Ability to work in a difficult work environment including biting insects, poison ivy and sumac, thorns, pollen, hot and cold weather, and occasional rain
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Good organizational and safety skills
  • Skill in interpreting satellite imagery and other basic maps is strongly preferred
  • Experience in applying herbicide and equipment operation including rotary mowers, UTVs, herbicide sprayers, and chainsaws is preferred
