Hire Salary:

The minimum starting salary for this position is $36,894. Additional compensation may be commensurate with education and experience.

About the Job:

The DCS Nurse Consultants’ mission is to provide consultation, assist with health and medical issues and to support the Family Case Managers (FCMs) in their decision to impact positive health, well-being, and safety for children and families.


The DCS Nurse Consultants are one of the specialized resources available to provide support to FCMs.  The DCS Nurse Consultant is responsible for providing consultation and medical expertise to assist FCMs and supervisors by analyzing and translating pertinent available information on a child’s medical status and any health and / or developmental vulnerabilities through both direct and indirect contact with children who may be victims of child abuse and / or neglect.  The DCS Nurse Consultant works with contracted services, community providers and other health care professionals to establish improved reporting and communication between the medical provider community and DCS.  This position is assigned to multiple DCS local offices and / or Regions.

What You'll Do:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Provide consultation for DCS cases with complex or multiple medical and health needs.
  • Collaborate on Pediatric Evaluation and Diagnostic Services (PEDS) referrals.
  • Answer medical or health related questions (medical diagnosis, medications, symptoms, etc.).
  • Identify / develop a comprehensive base of medical and health related resources available for children, families and DCS staff.
  • Access the Child and Hoosier Immunization Registry Program (CHIRP) to provide and interpret immunization records. 
  • Review and interpret medical records, provide written summaries and make nursing recommendations based on facts, supportive documentation, observations, and medical knowledge to DCS FCMs regarding the health and medical needs of a child.
  • Respond to referrals and document into the KidTraks database system.
  • Accompany FCMs on visits (home, provider, school) for DCS cases involving health or medical concerns.
  • Perform training for DCS staff, contracted service providers and the community.
  • Provide teaching / education to parents, guardians, caregivers, resource parents and assist the FCM in the development of appropriate medical and safety plans for a child.
  • Attend  (in person or virtually)Staff Meetings, Child and Family Team Meetings (CFTMs), Case Conferences, Permanency Roundtables (PRTs), Fatality Reviews and various other specialized meetings / conferences.
  • Certify as a CANS Super user and assist with Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths Assessment (CANS) questions.
  • Work collaboratively with other DCS PPS staff:  Clinicians, Educational Liaisons, Investigators, etc.  Work in partnership with Clinical Services Specialists to align behavioral health and medical services and to address areas where they overlap.  Work together with DCS Education Liaisons to ensure a child’s health and medical needs are being addressed at school.
  • Participates in staff meetings, conferences, PEDS peer review meetings, PEDS Nurse trainings, and completes all mandatory training requirements.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Education / Experience (Preferred):

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Two years professional pediatric nursing experience.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of pediatric nursing;
  • Thorough knowledge of medical and physical implications of childhood trauma and abuse;
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws, as well as agency rules and procedures regarding child abuse or neglect;
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practice of social work;
  • Working knowledge of National League of Nursing and Indiana State Board of Nursing guidelines.
  • Ability to prepare accurate, detailed summaries and recommendations, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Working knowledge of computers, computer applications and databases / network systems;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team environment;
  • Ability to decipher complex medical information, interpret and relate it to the social, psychological and economic needs of children and families;
  • Ability to problem solve, use critical thinking, prioritize work / tasks, manage time, and work within a change management environment;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive cases / encounters; and
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with DCS staff, the medical community, various governmental agencies, parents, and family members.
