About the Job:

As the Grounds Foreman, you will serve as grounds man for the Air National Guard Base at Fort Wayne.  You will be responsible for the roads and grounds, grounds equipment, and needed repairs, alterations, and general maintenance. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Ensure that planting, fertilizing, weed control, and lawn mowing is accomplished in a timely manner.  Required to operate lawn care equipment;
  • Levels, grades and fills surfaces:  Prepares areas for roads, walks, and parking by ditching, back sloping, level blading, scarifying, using motorized grader, or other equipment as necessary and available;
  • Performs site cleaning, excavation, backfilling, and similar work;
  • Lifts and moves heavy objects and sand, gravel or other loose materials.  Lifts moves, and positions heavy objects, supplies, and equipment by use of a forklift.  Loads and unloads loose material with backhoe or loader as available;
  • Operates other equipment such as runway vacuum sweepers, rotary and/or towed sweepers.  Operates industrial / agricultural type tractors and equipment when engaged in maintenance of real property.  Hauls maintenance materials using dump truck;
  • Operates snow removal equipment such as plows and rotary blowers.  Operates other applicable heavy or light equipment as required in snow removal.  Applies abrasives and other ice control products.  Ensures that snow removal operations are completed in safe and expedient manners.  Ensures that required personnel are contacted for snow removal operations;
  • Ensures equipment is maintained and prepared for use.  Ensures operator maintenance such as inspecting, cleaning, and lubricating equipment, preventive maintenance, adjustments, and changing of operating attachments is accomplished

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:

  • High school diploma or HSE
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to use skills in trades, which may include operating jackhammers, compressors, graders, dozers, snow plows;
  • Mechanical skills used in maintenance and repair of assigned shop equipment such as mowers, trimmers, saws;
  • Ability to skillfully use test equipment, and hand and power tools to complete repair jobs;
  • Specialized knowledge of agency, state, and federal safety standards and procedures;
  • Ability to read and understand drawings as needed to complete assigned duties.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work projects, and supervise employees in the performance of assigned duties;
  • Ability to maintain inventories, records, and reports;
  • Ability to legally operate assigned vehicles;
  • May be required to obtain CDL license to operate assigned vehicles on roadways;
  • Must be able to obtain a Military Flight Line driver’s license
  • Desired qualifications include technical training and/or apprenticeship, relevant work experience may substitute for formal training where appropriate;
  • Must be able to attain a secret security clearance

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
