About the Job:

The Culvert engineer is responsible for evaluating large culvert and small culvert assets for condition and need, evaluates all pertinent data regarding these structures and makes recommendations for future treatments in support of the Bridge Asset Engineer. The incumbent coordinates and monitors activities related to resolving large culvert and small culvert deficiencies, including the development of necessary documentation to submit requests for hydraulic and environmental approvals and working with Project Managers and Maintenance personnel on project delivery. Incumbent is responsible for supporting bridge asset related activities in the District. Provides assistance to the System Assessment Manager and Bridge Asset Engineer, including preparation of documents for programming contractual projects and preparation of documents for maintenance work plan projects.

A Day in the Life:

  • Reviews and makes recommendations to the Sub-District Operations Managers on the Maintenance Work Program.
  • Prepares documentation to request hydraulic analysis of culverts.
  • Prepares documentation to request environmental analysis of culverts.
  • Monitors status of culvert project activities and recommends solutions to problems.
  • Provides Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping support.
  • Assists with keeping geospatial data current.
  • Attends training sessions and conferences to learn new techniques & requirements.
  • Assists in researching and preparing documents for process improvements.
  • Attends field checks, meetings, seminars and conferences as needed.
  • Handles specialty projects and specific assignments as directed by the System Assessment Manager.
  • Assists the Maintenance Engineer in the investigation of drainage inquiries from internal and external clients as required. Assists in the creation of recommendations for the correction of drainage deficiencies and coordinates with the Maintenance Engineer and the Sub-Districts in the implementation of the corrective action.
  • Performs related work as required.

What We're Looking For:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and licensed as a registered Professional Engineer in Indiana;
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents including but not limited to bridge and large culvert design and rehabilitation plans, roadway plans, inspection reports, maintenance records, geotechnical data, hydraulic data, and maps.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Practical knowledge of construction and maintenance practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of department policies, standards and specifications relating to culverts and bridges.
  • Knowledge of department systems relating to the bridge programs, including but not limited to Scheduling Project Management System (SPMS), Deighton Transportation Information Management System (dTIMS), ArcGIS, and Work Management System (WMS).
  • Knowledge of culvert maintenance principles, practices, methods and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing, and to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Possession of basic computer skills and the ability to become proficient in new programs and databases.
  • Ability to perform basic calculations.
  • Possession of a valid Indiana driver’s license.
  • Broad knowledge, understanding, and application of the practices and methods in State Transportation.
