Role Overview

The Airfield Firefighter works under general direction of the Assistant Chief of Operations.  The purpose of the fire fighter occupation is to respond to airport/ aircraft rescue & fire fighting emergencies to suppress all types of fires and provide emergency services during other related emergency incidents. At this career level, incumbents respond to airport/aircraft rescue emergencies, suppress fires, perform rescue operations & operate & maintain fire station vehicles & equipment.

                                                                                                                           
Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00  but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

​The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Respond to airport and aircraft emergencies to suppress all types of fires which may cover a full spectrum of hazards spills and medical emergencies. 
  • Protect all evidence indicating probable cause of fire.  
  • Perform all tasks requiring tactical procedures during suppression, ventilation, rapid re-supply, and rescue.  
  • Operate and maintain all fire station equipment  
  • Perform required station duties including truck checks, cleaning trucks and station, and gear and truck maintenance. 
  • Support organization exercises, fire prevention inspections and risk assessments. 
  • Participate in company level inspections and fire department occupational safety and health programs.  
  • Perform and assist with department supply system, publication, and file maintenance.

What You'll Need for Success:

​This person must satisfy the following requirements to continue employment: 

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. 
  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE). 
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination. 
  • Must perform a physical performance requirements assessment prior to employment, initial training, and conduct an annual re-assessment. 
  • Security Clearance: Firefighters must obtain and maintain a favorable National Agency Check (NAC), Common Access Card (CAC) and a Restricted Area Access (Line Badge). 
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. 
  • Completion of Department of Defense aircraft fire school with International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certification in airport firefighter. 
  • Knowledge of firefighting practices and procedures. 
  • Hold and maintain a valid state driver’s license. 
  • Obtain and maintain a military driver’s license identifying assigned fire fighting vehicles.  
  • The ability to exercise caution to avoid loss of life, unnecessary property damage and injury to self and other personnel. 
  • The ability to wear protective clothing and safety equipment in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500 standards.  
  • Participates in ongoing physical fitness program.  

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
