About the Job:

As a Design Engineer, you will develop and produce plans, specifications, and engineering estimates for various in-house road and/or bridge projects in a timely manner.

A Day in the Life:

  • Develops and reviews detailed bridge and/or road, traffic, and maintenance design plans for avariety of transportation projects prepared within the office, and independently conducts studiesto assess feasibility and soundness of proposed project designs (and recommends changesbased on findings) regarding roadway and structure improvement type projects;
  • Renders directions and explanations of various plans for use by contractors;
  • Assists the supervisor in feasibility studies, including cost analysis and presenting plans to theDistrict for approval;
  • Generates standard detailed drawings using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD)software and manual drafting techniques (these drawings may involve drainage, trafficmaintenance, traffic control, general roadway, structures, right-of-way, signals, landscaping orlighting);
  • Calculates and summarizes plan quantities including pavement calculations, earthwork andseeding quantities;
  • Consults with Central Office involving design plans or projects;
  • Develops preliminary and detailed design roadway and/or bridge projects;
  • Uses CADD equipment for bridge and road plans;
  • Operates a state vehicle to travel to projects to conduct field work or reviews when necessary;
  • Keeps abreast of current CADD, computer publications, reading reports, attending technologyand design practices by reviewing trade conferences and participating in training seminars; and,
  • Assists with special projects and performs other related duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited school;Licensed as registered Professional Engineer in Indiana
  • This position can be underfilled by a Highway Engineer Trainee (with the required Bachelors Degree), a Highway Engineer 5 (with the required Bachelors Degree and the Engineer in Training/Fundamentals Engineering Certification), or as a Highway Engineer 4 (with the required Bachelor's Degree, the Engineer in Training/Fundamentals Engineering Certification, and a minimum of 2 years' experience as an engineer).
  • Must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license;Considerable knowledge of civil engineering, employee training and development, and supervisory principles and techniques
  • Considerable knowledge in the use of computer, CADD and drafting equipment;
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret variety of civil engineering principles, techniques, procedures, criteria, plans and specifications and related data;
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid engineering/technical conclusions and use statistical analysis;
  • Ability to cooperate with coworkers on group projects and establish a friendly atmospherewith coworkers;
  • Ability to handle routine and sensitive contacts with governmental officials, consulting firms,contractors and the general public;
  • Ability to plan and develop engineering projects with unique or controversial problems and/ornovel engineering related concepts and approaches;
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
