About the Evansville State Hospital:

Evansville State Hospital is one of the Indiana State Psychiatric Hospitals who are committed to the mission of Hope and Recovery. Residing on 88 acres on the east side of Evansville, Ind., our facility provides medical treatment for chronic mental illness and substance abuse disorders from our dedicated team of psychiatrists and advanced practice professionals. Active Treatment helps our patients achieve their goals directed towards living in the most non-restrictive environment possible. Our team of professionals assists our patients in the treatment process involving medical staff, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation therapy, and our community integration program. Evansville State Hospital continues to maintain accreditation through The Joint Commission as an Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital as well as Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services certification as a Psychiatric Medicare/Medicaid Hospital.

 

Salary Information:

This position traditionally starts at an hourly wage of $13.21

About the Job:

Positions are responsible for ensuring the security and safety of patients, staff, and visitors on the grounds of the Evansville State Hospital and when escorting patients and/or staff off grounds. 

A Day in the Life:

Patrols the hospital building and grounds in order to provide a visible deterrence to crime and to identify potential security/safety issues (e.g., monitors security of sensitive areas);

Communicates security/safety/building maintenance issues to appropriate management staff in a timely manner;     

Responds to reports of and/or identifies potentially illegal activity and takes necessary action (e.g., resolves situation if appropriate or calls proper authorities/personnel as required);

Establishes and maintains the security of the hospital in the event of a disaster or major disruption of hospital services.  Takes a lead role in disaster response in the absence of the Director of Security.

Maintains a presence at entrances to the hospital in order to monitor access to and from the hospital building;

Transports patients (including those that are high risk/criminally involved) and/or staff off grounds as required (e.g., to doctors' appointments, court hearings, or hospital transfers);

Assists nursing and other management staff with searches on the premises (e.g., search of a patient's locker for unauthorized items);

Assists external law enforcement or emergency response agencies as needed;

Makes daily runs to the bank (e.g., to make deposits/withdrawals) and post office;

Keeps abreast of hospital policies/procedures especially as they relate to security and safety, as well as accepted industry practices (e.g., "chain of custody" for potential evidence);

Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

Experience as a guard, watchman, firefighter, or police officer or high school diploma or GED

Valid driver’s license from State of residence is required.

Must obtain CPR and CPI certification, demonstrate ability to perform techniques, and maintain certification throughout employment.

Extensive knowledge of hospital property lines, buildings, and grounds;

Specialized knowledge of security/safety policies, practices, and procedures, as well as the hospital’s security plan and the ability to enforce these;

Working knowledge of computer software and electronic communication devices;

Ability to properly communicate with and/or respond to patients in a therapeutic manner;

Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing;

Ability to recognize and respond to potential security/safety issues and/or unlawful activity in an appropriate manner, and to notify management staff as necessary;

Ability to follow oral/written instructions and utilize appropriate guidelines in the completion of job duties.

Ability to work any shift.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
