Salary

 

This position traditionally starts at $16.73 per hour.

 

Role Overview

 

The Maintenance Worker provides general facilities support for the state historic site.  You will provide light maintenance work, assist in keeping the grounds neat, and help at event sites as needed. This position will travel between Angle Mounds/New Harmony/Vincennes, with the home site for it being Angle Mounds.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Handle light maintenance on site including minor repairs and cleaning/stocking of all three restroom locations.
  • Required to learn and operate all equipment on site.
  • Maintain the flow of water in the canal, removing blockage as required.
  • Coordinating with supervisor and site manager, responsible for all mowing of site property.
  • Assist with staffing the grist mill during public hours and special events – including selling admission and merchandise, operating the grist mill, and providing general customer service and daily site upkeep.
  • Assist with administrative duties as needed (e.g. daily office work, reception tasks, store stocking, etc.)
  • As needed, implement specialty tours and programs/events in coordination with the site manager and programmer.
  • Facilitate or assist with the facilitation of special events and facility rentals.
  • Assist in the facilitation of school group visits and programs and virtual programs
  • Be a resource for intermittent and new staff about site history and background knowledge, physical structure history, FAQs, operational standards and procedures, etc.
  • Represent the site professionally in the community as a good steward for the work of the site and system.
  • Be an advocate and steward for the region’s sites and the full 12-site system when engaging visitors
  • Provide excellent customer service to visitors and community partners
  • Contribute to a collaborative work environment across departments within the 12-site system

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Considerable knowledge of site history including the larger Whitewater Valley with a particular focus on significance to the local community and its relevance to larger stories.
  • Knowledge of grist mill equipment, historic and current functionality.
  • Ability to effectively share interpretive content with visitors to the site.
  • Understanding of operations of other departments as they relate to general ISMHS expectations as well as departmental procedures. 
  • Effective communication skills.  
  • Ability to set work priorities, manage workflow, take initiative, and self-start work when the site manager is not present. 
  • Ability to effectively give feedback, identify problems, and brainstorm solutions to improve the visitor experience and general functioning of the site.
  • Effectively manage community relationships.
