About the Job:

As a Maintenance Operations Supervisor, you will supervise various highway specialty areas (e.g. bridge, heavy equipment, maintenance, facilities etc.). You will be responsible for managing staff and participating in preventive maintenance and/or maintenance repair work of roads, bridges, traffic markings, heavy equipment, buildings, grounds, etc. You will offer direction to maintenance/facility staff for standard day-to-day operations, including prioritization of work assignments and making recommendations to work techniques. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Comply with Indiana Department of Transport (INDOT)’s Safety Policy and Procedures. 
  • Assign work to units ensuring that the needed materials and equipment are available. 
  • Ensure the most effective utilization of personnel, time, and equipment for each task. 
  • Provide supervision to a unit or group of employees while explaining the purpose of the job and all the programs that affect the work. Additionally, you will also be responsible for leading the hiring, training, and performance evaluation process for your team/unit. 
  • Oversee operation and maintenance ensuring that supervised employees accomplish the work orders by a scheduled finish date with minimal interruptions to the various operations. 
  • Support the Winter operations duties which include snow and ice removal. You will also help with the maintenance and troubleshooting of the District brine machines and application equipment. 
  • Assist with implementation/improvement of operational programs, procedures, and project planning. 


These additional duties may be performed depending on the job assignment: 


  • Perform emergency response activities such as: emergency bridge repair, bridge closures, inspections, clean up, traffic control, lane closures, placement of signs, and erecting barricades. 
  • Heavy Equipment:  
  • Anticipate heavy equipment needs of operations and be able to make recommendation/needs-based decisions on specification, duration, sourcing, and alternative solutions. 
  • Coordinate and deliver heavy equipment into district operations. Maintain a schedule of agency heavy equipment assets and the procurement of rental equipment to be scheduled to meet operational need of district operational work plans. 
  • Receive, investigate, and reply to complaints related to all District assets and coordinate with supervisor and unit personnel to ensure follow-up action is taken. 


  • Direct and manage all Traffic field operations, ensure all activities are planned, coordinated, and completed in the safest and most efficient manner possible. 
  • Review all routes for the District Sign Up-Grade Program and pavement markings. 
  • Visit job sites & facilities throughout district to conduct safety inspections. 


  • Assist the Facilities Manager with the daily operations of the Facilities Department. 
  • Identify, make recommendations to the proper parties, and take appropriate action to ensure timely correction of maintenance issues/problems at all district facilities. 
  • Research Work Management System (WMS) for data and generate data/reports on facilities. 
  • Ensure Work Order documentation associated with assigned and daily activities are up to date.  
  • Act on behalf of the Facilities Manager in his/her absence. 


  • Oversee the daily activities associated with the district fleet of vehicles and equipment. 
  • Work with the Operations team to develop detailed schedules of the work. 
  • Ensure all safety requirements are being met and conduct reviews.

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE). 
  • Must possess a valid driver's license. 
  • Must have valid Class A or Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) depending on the assigned duties or ability to obtain within 90 days. 
  • Specialized knowledge of highway principles, practices, methods, standards, and techniques relative to maintenance and repair of highway bridges, roads, heavy and general equipment, traffic markings etc. 
  • Considerable knowledge and experience in all phases of maintenance development. 
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, safety precautions, and regulations, compliance requirements as they relate to maintenance of bridge, traffic markings, highways, and equipment. 
  • Supervisory experience of multiple employees, minimum of one (1) year. 
  • Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment. 
  • Considerable knowledge and experience in transportation operations. 
  • General knowledge of welding, repairing, and general maintenance of equipment. 
  • Ability to properly schedule employee hours and coordinate trucks and materials needed during winter operations. 


  • Specialized knowledge of bridge deck and pavement preservation. 

Heavy Equipment 

  • At least one (1) year of experience required in operation of heavy construction equipment (e.g., 10-ton crawler, 10-ton backhoe, 18-ton dozer, over 44,000-pound truck mounted excavator) and related safety practices. 
  • Working knowledge of operation and safety measures in use of heavy motorized and construction equipment (e.g., crane, large backhoe and dozer, heavy crawler, excavator, tractor trailer); maintenance and repair of equipment; operation of light and heavy equipment (e.g., dump truck, grader, forklift, tractor-trailer, chain saw). 
  • Facilities 
  • Ability to understand and apply national and local codes, read and interpret electrical prints/schematics, and use a variety of tools and measuring devices common to the electrical trade 
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Class B license.

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
