The salary for this position typically starts at $68,770 and is commensurate based upon education and/or work experience.

 

INDOT’s Design Engineers develop and review bridge, road, traffic, and maintenance design plans.  They generate detailed project cost estimates, contract documents, plan drawings, apply for permits, and working with project managers coordinate with other development specialties. INDOT design engineers are typically assigned a number of projects with varied delivery dates and are able to be the primary project engineer for the entire development.

 

Having timelines planned in advance allows for maximum flexibility combined with work weeks being 37.5 hours long allow for exceptional work life balance. 

 

Working as a designer for INDOT allows an Engineer to focus more on development and less on salesmanship.

About the Job:

This position develops and produces plans, proposals, specifications, and engineering estimates for various in-house road and/or bridge projects.

A Day in the Life:

  • Develops and reviews detailed bridge and/or road, traffic, and maintenance design plans for a variety of transportation projects prepared within the office and to be carried out by others, independently conducts studies to assess feasibility and soundness of proposed project designs (and recommends changes based on findings) regarding roadway and structure improvement type projects;
  • Supervises lower-level transportation engineers, technicians and/or support personnel;
  • Renders directions and explanations of various plans for use by contractors;
  • Assists the supervisor in feasibility studies, including cost analysis and presenting plans to the District for approval;
  • Generates standard detailed drawings using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software and manual drafting techniques (these drawings may involve drainage, traffic maintenance, traffic control, general roadway, structures, right-of-way, signals, landscaping or lighting);
  • Calculates and summarizes plan quantities; including pavement calculations, earthwork and seeding quantities;
  • Assists supervisor in the development of section policy and the long range planning;
  • Consults with central office involving design plans or projects;
  • Develops roadway and/or bridge projects;
  • Uses CADD equipment for Bridge and Road plans;
  • Signs plans as a registered Professional Engineer;
  • Operates a state vehicle to travel to projects to conduct field work or reviews when necessary;
  • Keeps abreast of current CADD, computer publications, reading reports, attending technology and design practices by reviewing trade conferences and participating in training seminars; and,
  • Assists with special projects and performs other related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited school;
  • Licensed as registered Professional Engineer in Indiana;
  • Minimum two (2) years relevant experience;
  • Must possess valid Indiana driver’s license;

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Considerable knowledge of civil engineering, employee training and development, and supervisory principles and techniques;
  • Considerable knowledge in use of a computer, CADD, and drafting equipment;
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret variety of civil engineering principles, techniques, procedures, criteria, plans and specifications and related data; Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid engineering/technical conclusions and use statistical analysis;
  • Ability to cooperate with coworkers on group projects and establish a friendly atmosphere with coworkers;
  • Ability to handle routine and sensitive contacts with governmental officials, consulting firms, contractors, and the general public;
  • Ability to plan and develop engineering projects with controversial problems and/or novel engineering related concepts and approaches.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
