This position helps provides field survey support for the Design and Real Estate Sections. This position also assists with snow and ice removal operations when needed.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Sets up and operates equipment to obtain survey data & perform calculations for determination of precise measurements;
  • Operates higher level survey equipment including automatic level, total station, electronic data collectors, robotic total stations, and GPS equipment in order to obtain survey data & calculate precise measurements, & traversing and leveling operations (e.g., angles, distance, elevations);
  • Drives state survey van to transport equipment (e.g., automatic level, GPS equipment, total station, magnetic locators) to job site;
  • Assists crew leader in contacting property owners to obtain permission to work on private property, and in researching land titles and deeds for location of control points;
  • Formulates mathematical calculations for curves, bench circuits and property or traverse lines;
  • Acts as crew chief of survey crew in absence of crew leader;
  • Assists in maintenance of survey instruments & vehicles; stocks survey truck/van with necessary supplies;
  • Plot field data using CADD (Computer Aided Design Drawings) software for the preparation of survey drawings;
  • Receives training in higher level computations involving programmable calculators and personal computers;
  • Subject to mandatory callout for snow and ice removal activities;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Experience:
  • High school graduate or equivalent;
  • Minimum one (1) year experience on field survey crew or completion of associate core program of applied science in surveying, civil engineering or construction technology;
  • Considerable knowledge of geometry; trigonometry; and surveying;
  • General knowledge in operation of all types of survey measuring devices (e.g. total station, digital level, GPS receiver, electronic data collector)
  • Ability to understand systems of procedures and read, copy & record figures;
  • Ability to gather, collate & classify data;
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and demonstrate physical agility;
  • Must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license and ability to obtain and maintain valid Class B CDL within 90 days of employment.
  • Must possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or must obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Extensive knowledge of surveying and inspection techniques that are common to construction;
  • Extensive knowledge of accepted construction practices, procedures and precedents;
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state and local guidelines, manuals, permit laws and regulations as they apply to construction standards;
  • Considerable knowledge of highway statutory, departmental, and administrative laws, rules and regulations;
  • Considerable knowledge of highway construction practices in the field of civil engineering;
  • Basic knowledge of the various methods that are utilized in the acquisition of land and associated properties;
  • Ability to direct, coordinate, and review the overall work at multiple project sites and advise assistant project supervisors on technical and production tasks;
  • Ability to analyze data and prepare concise and informative reports from such data;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to read, interpret and evaluate a wide variety of construction plans.

Note: The Indiana Department of Transportation provides CDL training, pays for eligible employees to take CDL exams, and reimburses employees for eligible expenses for obtaining a CDL; including the CDL permit and license following their hire date.

 This position is typically filled at a salary of $28,080.00 annually / $14.40 per hour.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
