About the Job

As a Customer Service Representative you will perform a variety of auditing, control and public assistance duties relative to the payment and collection of various state taxes. You will also works to ensure the highest level of customer focus, with a strong commitment to the taxpayers of Indiana through continuous, innovative methods to increase accuracy, efficiency and productivity in all areas of departmental operations and tax administration.

A Day in the Life
  • Provides customer service to customers in person, by telephone or in writing, (correspondence, e-mail and INTax Mail Center) advising, instructing and furnishing information pertaining to the various tax types (sales, withholding, income, county innkeepers, food and beverage, motor vehicle, corporation and special taxes) administered and collected by the State Revenue Department
  • Interprets and applies State and Federal tax laws, rules and regulations in identifying and resolving technical tax problems
  • Performs account and financial maintenance which may result in creating and/or canceling liabilities, transferring payments, establishing payment arrangements, set and release holds on liabilities, and contacts taxpayers concerning errors, delinquencies or over payments in RPS and other related systems
  • Verifies payments, credits and deductions claimed on various tax returns in RPS and other related systems
  • Processes payments for a variety of tax types, electronically utilizing the E-Pay system or through incoming mail
  • Accepts cash payments and prepares bank deposits and funds reconciliation.
  • Assists in training and coaching Customer Service Specialist
What We're Looking For
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years' experience in direct customer service via both phone and direct customer facing contact. 
What You'll Need For Success
  • Extensive knowledge of state and federal tax laws, rules and regulations applying to each of the several types of taxes;
  • Extensive knowledge of the procedures for properly preparing various tax return forms;
  • Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws and legal procedures pertinent to estates and trusts;
  • Ability to interpret and apply tax laws and regulations to individual situations;
  • Broad knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping;
  • Working knowledge of data processing procedures;
  • Working knowledge of computers, both technical and word processing;
  • Ability to discuss and settle tax problems using various legal resources;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to apply and understand ethics and confidentiality laws.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
