Role Overview: 

This position oversees the maintenance and repair programs of all state bridges and culverts within a certain geographical area. This position will offer direction to maintenance staff for standard day to day operations; this includes prioritizing work assignments and making recommendations to work techniques. This role will report directly to the District Operations Manager.

 

Salary

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $53,222.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience. 

 

CDL Positions: 

Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.

This position is located in INDOT’s Bainbridge Unit.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

•    Complies with INDOT Safety Policy and Procedures
•    Assigns work to units ensuring that the needed materials and equipment are available
•    Ensures the most effective utilization of personnel, time and equipment for each task
•    Provides feedback to District Operations Manager for performance management purposes
•    Communicates employee issues to District Operations Manager providing documentation as necessary
•    Ensures that proper safety policies and procedures are followed
•    Ensures that staff completes work assignments as directed and that the work conforms with appropriate policies and procedures
•    Drafts short range plans to conform to material and allocated man hours
•    Has the ability to prioritize work with alternatives due to labor, machinery and supplies availability. Also, any emergency situations or weather-related delays
•    Performs emergency response activities such as: emergency bridge repair, bridge closures, inspections, clean up, traffic control, lane closures, placement of signs, and erecting barricades
•    Explains methods, procedures, scheduling and equipment available, as well as purpose of job and long and short range programs that may affect the work
•    Inspects and reviews work being performed for methods and procedures as well as meeting acceptable standards
•    Inspects work upon completion for appearance and end result
•    Ensures that required equipment and materials are requisitioned
•    Conducts annual job evaluations and discusses with employees
•    Identifies training needs and provides on the job training and special training sessions for correct maintenance methods, safety and first aid
•    Ensures that all administrative policies and procedures are adhered to
•    Conducts conferences with subordinates to ensure applicable policies, rules and regulations are understood and to determine problems or disciplinary action being considered
•    Winter operations duties includes snow and ice removal, also will help with the maintenance and troubleshooting of the District brine machines and application equipment.
•    Makes recommendations for the hiring, firing, and promotion or demotions or employees
•    Provides assistance to public by responding to general inquiries, customer complaints and explaining delays

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

•    Specialized knowledge of highway principles, practices, methods and techniques related to maintenance and repair of highway bridges
•    Specialized knowledge and the ability to apply highway principles and procedures as needed
•    Working knowledge of Work Management System card entry and PeopleSoft
•    Specialized knowledge of bridge deck and pavement preservation
•    Considerable knowledge and experience in all phases of maintenance development
•    Considerable knowledge and application of highway standards and specifications, highway statutory, departmental and administrative rules and regulations
•    General knowledge of district departmental activities
•    General knowledge of welding, repairing, and general maintenance of equipment
•    Basic knowledge of the functions of budgeting and purchasing
•    Report all equipment deficiencies to M-5 and Supervisor
•    Basic understanding of stockroom procedures
•    Ability to carry out policies and procedures in the District and Sub-District setting
•    Ability to analyze Sub-District maintenance activities
•    Ability to provide leadership and direction to all subordinate employees
•    Ability to operate a computer and have knowledge of various computer operating systems
•    Ability to effectively communicate with Sub-District and District personnel as well as officials and the public both verbally and in written form
•    Ability to properly schedule employee hours and coordinate trucks and materials needed during winter operations
•    Must have valid Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 90 days
•    High School graduate or equivalent required

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
