Position-Specific Information:

 

This position will report to the Veterinarian and will be responsible for the blood gas program blood draws.  The Director will keep a record of the Blood Gas chain of custody.  Additional responsibilities include ensuring proper regulations are met in the handling of biological hazardous waste, supervising the handling of all laboratory specimens to prevent tampering, confusion, or contamination and to ensure employees adhere to Commission policies related to protecting the integrity of the industry.
  
Salary:


This pay for this position typically starts at $18.24 per hour. 

 

About the Job:

 

As the Horse Racing Director, you will be responsible for the Blood Gas program. In this position, you will be responsible for record keeping and ensuring proper regulations are met.

A Day in the Life:

 

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Provide oversight of Blood Gas program operations. 
  • Supervise the handling of all laboratory specimens to prevent tampering, confusion, or contamination. 
  • Keep proper records of blood gas activity and sample specimens to ensure the integrity of the chain of custody. 
  • Prepare and deliver samples for shipment to testing laboratory. 
  • Draw blood on horses as directed by Commission Blood Gas Policy. 
  • Serve as back up for the Veterinary Technician(s) in the Test Barn.

What You'll Need for Success:

 

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • A Registered Veterinary Technician (such as a graduate of Purdue University Veterinary Technology Program or its equivalent) is preferred. 
  • Record keeping, administrative and supervisory skills. 
  • Practical experience with large animals, preferably horses. 
  • Thorough knowledge of Indiana Horse Racing Commission rules and regulations.  
  • Broad knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and terminology. 
  • Broad knowledge of chemistry, laboratory procedures and terminology. 
  • Knowledge of security procedures as applied to laboratory organization and policies. 
  • Ability to obtain biological samples from animal subjects. 
  • Ability to apply analytical skills to select appropriate guidelines and formulate and follow through a variety of investigative and/or research projects. 
  • Fingerprinting and the ability to pass a limited criminal history check is required for this position. 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
