About the Indiana State Department of Toxicology:
The Indiana State Department of Toxicology provides forensic toxicological services and education about the science of toxicology. ISDT supports the criminal justice system through analyses for alcohol and selected drugs in blood samples submitted by law enforcement agencies and coroners, furnishing expert testimony, educating on the pharmacology and toxicology of drugs, training and certifying law enforcement officers to administer breath tests for alcohol, certifying breath test instruments, and certifying ignition interlock device models.
Role Overview:
The role serves as the Assistant Director for the Indiana State Department of Toxicology. The role oversees administrative matters, including quality assurance and quality control, continued compliance with accreditation standards, and budget preparation and maintenance.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $102,024.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
- Review and evaluate organizational effectiveness, goal determination, and strategic planning, etc., and make recommendations for improvement.
- Develops and coordinates plans and policies, resources, and mission as well as goals, vision and expectations of agency or program.
- Provide information to agencies and the public regarding applicable laws and rules.
- Supervise subordinate personnel including hiring, determining workload, and delegating assignments, training, monitoring, and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary action.
- Monitor agency or program budget including revenues, expenditures, and budget projections.
- Communicate with news and other media and respond to media questions or requests in an appropriate public relations manner.
- Coordinate with other government officials on planning issues (i.e. federal and/or state agency directors, etc.).
- Coordinate, review, and evaluate the use of appropriate controls and standards for the agency.
- Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
- Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
- Serve as the Director in the absence of the Director.
- Oversee forensic services, evidence integrity, and compliance with accreditation standards and accepted forensic scientific practices.
- Administer grant funded projects.
- Lecture as needed to members of law enforcement, attorneys, and other groups.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping procedures.
- Assist in establishing operating standards and procedures for staff.
- Serve on and chair interview committees.
- Maintain effective communication with the criminal justice community and the general public.
What You'll Need for Success:
- Master’s degree or Ph.D., preferably in Chemistry, Forensic Science, or Biology and two years of full-time laboratory management experience in forensics; or,
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Chemistry, Forensic Science, or Biology and five years of full-time laboratory management experience in forensics.
- Experience in an accredited forensic toxicology and breath test laboratory desirable.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to develop and/or measure program outcomes.
- Ability to create and maintain strong working relationships with key public and private government and business leaders.
- Ability to identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, and use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations.
