 About Indiana Geographic Information Office (IGIO):

 

The IGIO facilitates the development, maintenance, distribution, and use of comprehensive statewide geographic data and geospatial technology to empower governments, universities, and businesses to address issues affecting Indiana’s physical, economic, and social well-being.  We:

  • Coordinate geospatial efforts between and among units of the federal, state, and local governments.
  • Integrate GIS data developed and maintained by state agencies and political subdivisions into a statewide base map.
  • Develop and maintain statewide framework data layers associated with a statewide base map (orthoimagery, elevation, cadastre/parcels, PLSS, geodetic controls, addresses, street centerlines, government boundaries, and many more

 

Salary:
 

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $61,022.  Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

 

Role Overview:

 

GIS Outreach Coordinators focus on their local area to represent the IGIO to county and local governments and stakeholders across other sectors. The coordinators support and advance the IGIO’s programs and projects which include the award-winning Data Harvest program, the Imagery & Elevation programs, and the IndianaMap open data portal.  Your initial priority will be the Data Harvest program and related coordination with local governments to improve the quality of the data, the processes by which the data is maintained and provided to the state, and the frequency of updates.  You will create, foster, and support relationships with stakeholders and serve as a local resource for IGIO-related questions.

 

Key outcomes for these roles are:

  • Work with the GIO, Deputy GIOs, and fellow Outreach Coordinators to prioritize tasks and contacts, set the vision, and document information gathered during outreach efforts.
  • Establish and maintain a network of local stakeholders and participate in relevant local user group meetings.
  • Promote the IGIO’s programs.
     

These positions require:

  • A strong knowledge of GIS and data standards. Experience with NENA’s NG-9-1-1 standard.
  • Attention to detail.
  • In-depth knowledge of GIS software, such as Esri’s suite of products or QGIS.
  • Excellent communication skills.


This is a remote position that will serve northern Indiana.  Residency within the assigned region is highly preferred.  You may occasionally travel to Indianapolis for agency and coordinating meetings. 

 

A Day in the Life:

 

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Represent the IGIO when meeting with stakeholders.
  • Inform stakeholders of the programs the IGIO provides.
  • Represent the IGIO at conferences. When applicable, present and man booth.
  • Coordinate with the rest of the team.
  • Conduct geographic information system (GIS) program activities, utilizing GIS hardware and software to produce maps, spatial databases, and thematic data.
  • Document procedures, validate data for accuracy and completeness, and produce maps of the resulting information.
  • Evaluate information and data from outside sources to determine the quality of the data.
  • Coordinate and communicate on the sharing of spatial data and maintain public-facing web maps and applications hosted in the GIO Enterprise.

What You'll Need for Success:

 

  • Working knowledge of and the ability to make practical application of geography, cartography, GIS software and tools, and principles, practices, terminology, and technology of GIS.
  • Ability to create spatial and related data.
  • Knowledge of database concepts, such as versioning, keys, and schemas.
  • Basic understanding of data collection processes and challenges, including sourced data from services, downloads, or other delivery methods.
  • Ability to integrate spatial data from several sources, identify clean and unusable data, and solve a process for cleaning the data.
  • Ability to configure map, feature, and image services based on customer use and ESRI best practices, to achieve optimal performance.
  • Ability to change one’s mind easily if given sufficient evidence and adopt the scientific method to solve problems.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
