Incumbent leads a team of automotive mechanics engaged in minor and major repairs and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Incumbent assists mechanics in diagnosing and resolving mechanical problems, inspects completed work and equipment, and ensures that procedures and safety practices are followed. Incumbent may also perform major overhauls of gasoline and/or diesel engines, and repair most difficult and complex automotive problems (e.g., replacement or repair of pistons, rings, crank shafts, medium and heavy duty automatic transmissions, single and twin counter shaft manual transmissions).

Starting minimum salary $42,744, pay commensurate with experience.


The Highway Mechanic Supervisor leads a team of automotive mechanics engaged in major and minor repairs and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.  Assist mechanics in diagnosing and resolving mechanical problems.  Inspects completed work & equipment and ensures that proper safety procedures and practices are followed.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Supervises team of automotive mechanics engaged in major and minor repairs and maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
  • Inspects completed work and equipment and ensures that procedures and safety practices are followed;
  • Diagnoses electronic engine control systems using scan tools, laptop computers and available software;
  • Repairs systems using up-to-date diagnostic equipment, identifies, troubleshoots and  repairs/replace engine electronic sensors;
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and calibrate central hydraulic system control units used in highway salt applications;
  • Test drives a variety of motorized equipment;
  • Repairs, rebuilds and/or replaces minor and major parts;
  • Adjusts valves and performs preventative maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment;
  • Performs miscellaneous mechanical work (e.g., body repair work; repair or replace tires);
  • Cleans or replaces diesel injectors;
  • Provides service and repair of vehicles and equipment on emergency basis;
  • Schedules maintenance and repairs of equipment;
  • Maintains repair or service records;
  • Attends appropriate training schools;
  • Updates shop manuals and parts books;
  • Operates welding equipment;
  • Operates computer to enter, edit, and retrieve data from computer systems;
  • Performs inventories of machinery and heavy equipment and/or orders and picks up parts and supplies;
  • Operates equipment such as snow plow and/or tow truck;

Preferred Experience:
  • High School graduate or Equivalent
  • Must possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or must obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems and repairs;
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to instruct others in use of diagnostic equipment;
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety precautions;
  • Knowledge of employee training and development;
  • Ability to understand system of mechanical procedures;
  • Ability to understand technical manuals;
  • Ability to maintain reports and inventory levels;
  • Ability to instruct, plan and distribute work to subordinates;
  • Must provide own tools;
  • Must be able to pass a drug screening;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
