Unpaid Internship:
The Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) summer internship program is an unpaid summer internship that lasts approximately 3.5 months.
About the Job:
This position will serve as an Intern for the Vincennes District/ Technical Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to District Traffic Planning Engineer.
A Day in the Life:
• Analyze southwest Indiana speed data to generate a list of future Vincennes District mobility projects
• Perform traffic capacity analysis using Synchro and/or Highway Capacity Software to find potential intersection improvement projects
• Perform signal warrant analyses to phase out unwarranted signals districtwide
• Investigate intersection crash data to determine crash trends and program improvement projects to alleviate these issues
• Use Microstation to create rough sketches of intersection improvements to ensure feasibility within INDOT right of way
• Perform field checks at potential project locations to determine current conditions
• Assist traffic engineering section with other projects which may arise over the summer
What You'll Need For Success:
- Working towards a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Relevant work experience preferred
- Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
- Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
- Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
- Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
- Analytical skills
- Ability to handle multiple projects
- Ability to operate computer tools
- Good research and writing skills
- Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
- Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
