About the Job:

This position is located in the State Facilities Office, Facility Section of the Military Department of Indiana, Adjutant General’s Agency, housed in an Armory within the Northwest region. You will act as the Facilities Director’s and State Contracting Officer representative in managing, directing, supervising and coordinating master planning; engineering design; construction and inspection; real property management; maintenance; fire prevention and protection; utilities, system and environmental management through an overall augmented staff of over 100 State employees, technician and military personnel located at National Guard Armories and training sites throughout the State of Indiana. Also included is all maintenance functions at large multi-building state institutions or mega-armories located in various cities with complex utility distribution systems. Directs and supervises steam plant supervisor, utility supervisor, maintenance and repair and Building Service Workers who, in return, supervise daily operations in their respective areas.

A Day in the Life:

The essential elements of the job duties: 

  • Assists and acts as the State Facilities Director representative in the daily operation of assigned buildings operated by the Indiana National Guard. Includes but is not limited to:
  • May supervise the steam plant supervisor in the operation of the powerhouse/boilers in determining work priorities, planning maintenance, construction and repairs and ensuring safe and efficient generation and distribution of steam and water systems at assigned Armories, Field Maintenance Shops and other military State owned facilities; 
  • Supervises complex distribution systems at multiple site locations, including electrical, HVAC systems, water softening, fire suppression systems, boiler systems, elevators, water treatment, water quality, sewage disposal plants, underground storage tanks and overhead cranes;
  • Plans, prepares work specifications or consults with outside engineers, Department of Public Works at Camp Atterbury, Knightstown staff, to implement repairs, renovations, remodeling or construction to improve powerhouse or for any facility construction jobs; including preparation of construction scope of work and independent government estimates for the construction;
  • Provides long-range planning and scheduling of work within each trade section within the maintenance department for larger facilities; and provides short and long range scheduling of construction and maintenance projects for the Military Department of Indiana;
  • Coordinates and generally supervises the preventative maintenance program for the agency, including deadlines and reviews progress and operation of each maintenance and repair site operator, as well as reviews progress and operation of maintenance sections to ensure quality and expeditiousness of work and control of material and expenses

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Five (5) years experience in the operation and maintenance of HVACR (heating, ventilation, airconditioning and refrigeration systems); steam, water, sewage, and electrical distribution systems and general building maintenance plus four (4) years as a supervisor in two or more of the above areas; or accredited college training in a related field. 
  • High school diploma or HSE
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s License.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety standards to ensure efficient operation;
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods involved in operations of all utility functions such as water softening and treatment, sewage disposal, air conditioning, and electrical distribution;
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to plan, understand and interpret detailed plans and specifications;
  • Ability to coordinate many separate maintenance, utility, and Military activities into an efficient, effective operation;
  • Ability to supervise, instruct, train, and direct the work of Building Service Workers and Maintenance Repair personnel. 
  • Ability to foresee problems, make adjustments, provide long or short-range plans, and implementing preventative maintenance programs;
  • Ability to keep abreast of changes and innovations in the field of engineering, building construction, and utility functions.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
