Salary: The salary for this position traditionally starts at $62,322.00 per year but may be commensurate with education and/or experience.


Location: INDOT - LaPorte District, Construction Division.  Join our team!

Our District includes 13 counties - Carroll, Cass, Fulton, Jasper, Lake, LaPorte, Marshall, Newton, Porter, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke and White.




About the Job:

Incumbent delegates work assignments to certified technicians and surveyors, performs and directs layout work, coordinates the sampling and testing of aggregates, steel, asphalt, soils and all other materials, and resolves conflicts and interpretation problems with contractors.

A Day in the Life:

  • Makes recommendations to superiors relating to change orders;
  • Prepares progress reports, special reports relating to problems and delays, and examines and approves daily field reports prepared by others;
  • Coordinates work assignments of technicians with other supervisors and Area Engineers;
  • Responds to inquiries from local public officials, news organizations and other interested parties;
  • Maintains control over attendance and work conditions for subordinates;
  • Ensures that both INDOT and contractor employees are performing work in a safe manner in compliance with OSHA and other applicable standards, and reports deficiencies to appropriate office;
  • Maintains all files related to project in an orderly and usable manner;
  • Supervises preparation of final construction records, examines and approves contractor requests for payment;
  • Attends preconstruction and partnering meetings as INDOT representative;
  • Meets with affected property owners in the project area and works to resolve access restriction issues, drainage problems and other issues that may arise during construction;
  • Maintains daily project records and files, and oversees the work of technicians doing the same, including: daily reports of materials placed, locations of work, work interruptions, contractor workforce size and composition, test results, and any other related information;
  • Prepares simple field drawings or sketches as necessary to implement and document minor changes to project specifications;
  • Prepares and submits a wide variety of documentation to the Final Review Office, and coordinates with the Final Review Office in the project closure process, answering questions and doing research as requested;
  • Teaches certified technician classes and assists students in preparation for examinations;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering;
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Indiana;
  • Twelve (12) months experience as a Transportation Engineer;
  • Must possess valid driver's license;
  • Considerable knowledge in Microsoft programs;
  • Broad knowledge in construction material sampling and testing standards and Federal, State, and Departmental established test procedures and standards pertaining to materials;

What You'll Need For Success

  • Skill in operation, calibration and maintenance of materials testing/sampling equipment;
  • Limited knowledge of AASHTO, ASTM, ITM, and INDOT specifications;
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions;
  • Ability to maintain and complete accurate and concise reports;
  • Specialized knowledge of, and ability to apply, a variety of Federal, State, and local guidelines, manuals and regulations for purposes of construction inspection for compliance with standards;
  • Ability to read and interpret highway and bridge plans and to identify errors and omissions;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Ability to work independently; and,
  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with technical and nontechnical persons.
