About the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH)

Role Overview

The Office of the Commissioner at the Indiana State Department of Health provides support for all areas of the Department, including, but not limited to, the opioid epidemic, infectious disease prevention, immunizations, trauma and injury prevention, and infant mortality. The office champions inter-professional collaboration, data collection and sharing, community engagement, mobilization, and programmatic inclusion of public health issues as means by which to engage community and governmental partners in prevention efforts across Indiana. The intern will report to the Director of Legislative and External Affairs to experience policy making and advocacy in a public health setting. The intern would have the opportunity to actively participate in the following activities: 
•    Learning the legislative process including tracking of legislation
•    Assist with scheduling meetings and note taking
•    Assist in creating and editing communication with stakeholders 
•    Assist in planning Public Health Day
•    Attend meetings with staff 

This is a spring internship. Hours are flexible; however, a commitment of approximately 10-20 hours/week is preferable. Start and end dates are flexible; however, a minimum commitment of three months is preferable. 


Hourly Rate

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $16.24/hr but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Interest in public health, health education, event management, legislative affairs or related area

  • Outstanding organizational skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Able to work independently

  • Able to work under pressure and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Able to be flexible, multitask, and prioritize

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Familiarity with Excel databases

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
