About the Indiana Department of Administration (IDOA):

IDOA centrally manages activities relating to state purchasing, the vehicle fleet, state travel, real estate leases, property disposition, and the Government Center Campus, among others. In addition to agency support, the department provides assistance to minority, women, and veteran business enterprises interested in state contracting opportunities. Through its activities, IDOA helps to ensure the smooth function of state government, finding efficient and effective solutions to government-wide needs.

About the Job:

The Equipment Mechanic performs preventative maintenance and service on cars, trucks, mowers, lawn mowers, state body trucks, tractors, generators, chain saws, weed eaters, pumps, tar distributors and other motorized equipment as assigned by supervisor.  The Mechanic test drives state vehicles/equipment to ensure proper operation after completion of repairs.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this roles are as follows:


  • Rebuilds, replaces and/or repairs on cars, trucks, and other state equipment;
  • Provides service and repair of vehicles and equipment on emergency basis;
  • Maintains Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and/or picks up parts;
  • Uses welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal;
  • Tunes gas and/or diesel engines and inspects vehicles/equipment for damage;
  • Snow removal when necessary;
  • Attends appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings or related meetings;
  • Orders and/or picks up parts.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to use tools associated with vehicle and motorized equipment repair;
  • Practical knowledge of appropriate safety practices associated with repair and maintenance of vehicles and/or motorized equipment;
  • Extensive knowledge of automobile of auto repair procedures and repair materials and tools used in auto/equipment repair;
  • Ability to repair mowers, generators, chain saws, etc.;
  • Skill in operating hand and power tools related to the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
  • Ability to understand system of mechanical procedures;
  • Ability to use welding equipment;
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions and to complete records and reports;
  • Ability to use repair manuals and parts catalogues;
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to follow directions and work as a part of a team;
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing and walking for long periods of time.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
