About the Indiana Horse Racing Commission (IHRC):
 

We know real Hoosier horsepower!  The Indiana Horse Racing Commission oversees pari-mutuel horse racing in Indiana while protecting the integrity of the sport through active and diligent regulation.  

 

This position is for the Harrah's Hoosier Park in Anderson, IN.

 

Salary:

 

This position is typically filled at an hourly wage of $14.50 per hour and includes the following bonuses:

  • $50 Sign-on Bonus: Awarded to employees who begin employment on or before March 25, 2022.
  • $150 Mid-season Bonus:  Awarded to employees who begin employment on or before March 25, 2022 AND remain employed through July 23, 2022.
  • $300 Full-season Bonus:  Awarded to employees who begin employment on or before March 25, 2022 AND remain employed during the entire racing season.

About The Job:

 

 

The Test Barn Attendant shall be responsible for the collection and sealing of horse urine samples in accordance with chain of custody procedures and adhering to test barn operational procedures. Working hours range from 6:00 until the last race, Wednesday - Saturday.  Occasional Mondays may be scheduled.

 

This position is intermittent and is located at Harrah's Hoosier Park in Anderson, Indiana.

A Day In the Life:

 

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • In accordance with commission standard operating procedures, procure a urine sample of each horse entering the test barn for testing.
  • Responsible for verifying the tattoo/freeze brand of each horse entering the test barn.
  • Responsible for verifying whip welts, cuts, etc. on horses as assigned.
  • Maintain the test barn in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • As the initial link in the chain of custody for testing samples, the responsibility of the individual is substantial. The consequences of errors are considerable. An error or failure to follow proper procedures may result in unwarranted suspension, jeopardizing the livelihood of the horses’ licensed trainer.  Also, substantial unwarranted fines (up to $10,000). Conversely, an error or failure to follow proper procedures may permit a trainer guilty of a drug violation rule to go unpunished. The cost, including legal fees, of Test Barn Attendant mistakes, may also be substantial.
  • Work with the Commission Veterinarian on duty, Test Barn Supervisor, licensed trainers, and grooms.

What Is Needed For Success:

  • Three (3) years employment or high school diploma;
  • Responsible for following commission rules, policies and procedures regarding sample collection and chain of custody; 
  • Knowledge of commission rules, policies and procedures regarding sample collection is a plus;
  • Hands-on experience with large animals, preferably horses, is desired.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
