About the Job:

As the IOSHA Inspector, you will serve as an inspector of commercial or industrial establishments and/or construction sites for the purposes of enforcing statutes, standards, rules, regulations and policies and ensuring workplace safety within the Industrial section of the Indiana Department of Labor (IDOL).  This position requires traveling through the central counties of Indiana.  

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Conducts assigned inspections of commercial or industrial establishments and/or construction sites to recognize, evaluate and enforce health and safety conditions and standards adopted by the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Act (IOSHA);
  • Investigates employee complaints against employers which create adverse work conditions;
  • Determines whether or not necessary safety and health precautions are being followed by both the employer and employees;
  • Investigates employee accidents resulting in death or injury to determine circumstance under which accident occurred;
  • Conducts opening and closing conferences with management and employees and/or their representatives;
  • Collect and analyze data and compare such to appropriate established safety and health regulations and document findings through notes, sketches, photographs, etc.;
  • Documents and cites violations of standards, rules and regulations and discusses their abatement;
  • Performs support function for agency attorney for both investigations and inspection activities, performs legal research, prepares exhibits, witness list, wage-loss calculations and other evidence to be presented in hearings;
  • Prepares investigative report compiling detailed and complex evidence in accordance with relevant laws, regulations and precedents;
  • Testifies at informal hearings and occasionally before the Board of Safety Review;
  • Conducts initial review with discrimination complainant, completes appropriate forms and files complaint within prescribed time constraints;
  • Prepares investigative plan and determines proper method of obtaining relevant data:  identifies types and sources of relevant information including policies, procedures and comparative data;
  • Initiates investigations and collects evidence through extensive, detailed interviews with all concerned parties;
  • Summarizes the facts, evidence, statistical information and overall data recommending whether or not there is probable cause to believe that discrimination or non-compliance has occurred;
  • Conducts follow-up case review and recommends enforcement of settlement regarding delinquent or deficient compliance;
  • Interacts with federal, state and local safety, environmental, and health agencies in enforcement activities;

What We're Looking For:

  • Must have and hold a valid Indiana’s Driver’s License;
  • Knowledge and skill typically acquired through a Baccalaureate degree plus related work experience; related academic training plus comparable work experience alone may substitute for the degree where appropriate;

  • Specialized knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply laws relevant to IOSHA and various practices and precedents falling within the jurisdiction of IOSHA;
  • Specialized knowledge of, and ability to implement, effective investigate methods, practice and strategies required to conduct difficult, complex investigations and obtain information vital to determining disposition and enforcement recommendations;
  • Specialized knowledge of interpersonal skills required to maintain focus on the issue involved in mediating and conciliating negotiated settlements;
  • Working knowledge of all phases of commercial, and industrial processes and the ability to recognize potentially hazardous conditions;
  • Ability to comprehend and operate diagnostic equipment such as noise monitors, electrical testers, atmosphere monitoring pumps and other testing equipment;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employers, employees, their representatives, public officials and the general public and ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in written form;
  • Ability to work in unpleasant and hazardous conditions, including noise and toxic chemicals and ability to work in extreme adverse weather conditions;
  • Ability to use a computer.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
